    Apple Is Trying to Find a Manufacturer For Its Self-Driving Car

    Apple is already reportedly in talks with Hyundai.

    South Korean automaker Hyundai Motors is in early stage talks with tech titan Apple to develop an electric car, CNBC reports. Shares of the manufacturer surged by 19 percent following the news.

    Hyundai isn’t the only carmaker in talks with Apple. “We understand that Apple is in discussion with a variety of global automakers, including Hyundai Motor,” a Hyundai Motor rep told CNBC. “As the discussion is at its early stage, nothing has been decided.”

    Project Titan

    According to a report by Korea Economic Daily, Apple is looking to release the car in 2027 and is including both battery development and vehicle production in its proposal.

    Apple Car Won’t Be Ready for At Least Half a Decade

    Rumors about Apple’s work on an autonomous car have picked up in recent weeks, but the project is still in the early stages and it will be years before an Apple Car launches, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

    Sources with knowledge of Apple’s product plans told Bloomberg that it will take Apple “at least half a decade” to launch an autonomous electric vehicle.

    Apple has a small team of hardware engineers that are working on drive systems, vehicle interiors, and external car designs with the goal of eventually shipping a vehicle to customers.

    Apple’s car plans have shifted multiple times over the years and just a couple of years ago, rumors indicated Apple had decided to forego development of a full car and was instead focusing on an autonomous driving system that could perhaps be provided to other car manufacturers.

    Apple recently poached a top engineering executive named Manfred Harrer from Porsche, according to a report from Business Insider Deutschland. Apple’s recent hire adds even more credence to rumors regarding Apple’s ambitions in the automotive space. During his stint at Porsche, Harrer was a widely respected engineer with a specialty in chassis design.

    “The American headhunting is amazing,” a former VW manager tells BI. “Mr. Harrer was a hidden gem. He’s a very low-key guy who doesn’t go looking for praise. He’s the measure of all things in his field.”

    The “Apple Car” would be a completely autonomous electric car and would be manufactured in West Point, Ga., at a Kia plant if the deal closed, according to CNBC.

    People familiar with the matter told CNBC that Apple has been working on this car for a while and hopes to have its roll out in 2024. However, Hyundai-Kia still might not be the car company Apple pairs with.

    Apple could go with another company since the deal has not been finalized or work with Hyundai-Kia along with another company.

    Although the look of an “Apple Car” has not been released, a source provided a description of the car.
